The AGS publications, Geographical Review and FOCUS on Geography, are now distributed by Wiley-Blackwell. The GR has an average turnaround time from submission to publication of about 9 months, with FOCUS around a 6-month turnaround time. FOCUS on Geography is a peer-reviewed journal, as is GR, and both publications seek manuscripts that are written with a lay audience in mind. Younger scholars in geography and affiliated disciplines are encouraged to consider both publications as an outlet for their research, as GR and FOCUS reach a large, international audience. For more information, visit the AGS Website.

Members of the American Geographical Society’s Writers Circle recently circulated two Op Eds. Julie Michelle Klinger and Emma Gaalaas Mullaney are geographers doing research on women veterans of armed struggles, and in this commentary published on October 18, they explain the international controversy over human rights tribunals in East Timor and one former guerilla’s call for forgiveness. David Keeling, AGS Councilor, had his most recent Op Ed published in the Washington Times on October 28th and in the Hawaii Reporter on October 26th. It argues that geographic ignorance on the part of public policy makers is not just embarrassing for a nation. It is dangerous! Check out all the AGS Op Eds on its Media webpage.

Editor Sought for FOCUS on Geography

The American Geographical Society seeks applications and nominations for Editor of FOCUS on Geography. The new Editor is appointed for a three-year editorial term that will commence on January 1, 2010, with Volume 53.

FOCUS on Geography is a forty-page, full-color quarterly journal with articles written by well-known academic and professional geographers; in-depth theme sections; maps and photos; and special country issues. Written and edited by geographers, FOCUS for decades has provided geographical analysis and perspective in a relaxed and readable style for a wide audience that includes P-12 teachers, the business community, professional geographers, and the general public. The FOCUS Editor will solicit, review, and accept for publication articles, photo essays, and other items appropriate for publication in the journal. The AGS expects that the new Editor will accept manuscripts from across the breadth and depth of international activity in contemporary geography.

In support of these goals, the FOCUS Editor should possess a strong record of scholarly achievement, a broad perspective on the discipline of geography, respect and affection for its diversity, and an ability to work constructively with authors during the review process. Institutional support for the new Editor (especially some time released from teaching) is desirable, but not mandatory, as is prior experience editing a journal or other quarterly publication. The AGS will provide a modest stipend to be used at the Editor’s discretion.

A letter of application that addresses both qualifications and a vision for FOCUS on Geography should be accompanied by a complete curriculum vitae. Nominations and/or applications should be submitted no later than November 15, 2009. Send applications or letters of nomination to: Executive Director, The American Geographical Society, 120 Wall Street, Suite 100, New York, NY 10005-3904. Nominations and applications may also be submitted electronically to ags@amergeog.org.

The American Geographical Society announces with great sadness that Larry Ford died of pancreatic cancer late yesterday afternoon. As a long-time supporter, councilor, and friend of the AGS, Larry carved out a distinguished career as an urban geographer at San Diego State University. His books, articles, and talks made him one of the most influential urban geographers of his generation – take a look at #89 on this web site of the 100 top urban thinkers. Larry was a wonderful person, with a quick wit and never-ending quips that kept friends and colleagues smiling whenever he was around.
The AGS has lost someone special.
